Shikoku is one of the five main islands of Japan and is the second-smallest main island after Okinawa. Its name literally means ‘four provinces’, since the island comprises of four old “”countries””, which are now modern prefectures: Awa, Tosa, Sanuki, and Iyo.
Locals believe that, if you visit the 88 temples scattered around the Shikoku Island, your mind will be more at peace and you will become fully aware of your true self. This is known as the Shikoku Pilgrimage and follows the trail set in 815 by Kobo Daishi, a Buddhist monk, poet and calligrapher, and founder of the Shingon school of Buddhism.
